Discovering Natural Splendour: Thala Beach Nature Reserve in Queensland

Where Adventure Meets Luxury in Paradise

Thala Beach Nature Reserve occupies the forest-clad headland at the northern end of Oak beach

Queensland, Australia is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, and within this lush landscape, the Thala Beach Nature Reserve stands out as an oasis of tranquility, offering an unparalleled escape for those seeking a harmonious blend of luxury and nature.

Located on a private headland between Cairns and Port Douglas, nestled between the ancient Daintree Rainforest and the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a haven that beckons to the adventurous spirit and the eco-conscious traveler alike.

At first glance, Thala Beach Nature Reserve feels like a hidden paradise with its coconut trees plantation and its own private beach… 2kms of pristine sand lined with sheoak trees for you to enjoy… it looks like a postcard with its turquoise water, no wonder some famous brands chose this location for their new fashion campaigns.

But Thala Beach Nature Reserve is more than just a place; it’s an experience to enjoy to the fullest. It was our second time there and while I was a bit worried I would not enjoy it as much as I did the first time as I already knew (or so I thought) what to expect…. I was actually completely wrong and Thala Beach prove to me that you can go back to it and still been surprised and amazed and make a totally different holiday out of it as there are so much to do, to see and to experience.

As you arrive at this exquisite eco-resort, you’re greeted by a vision of unspoiled beauty where the coral sea, meets the mountains and the tropical forest.

Thala Beach is a deluxe family-owned eco and wildlife retreat containing 58 hectares of native forest adjacent to secluded Oak Beach

A Tropical Hideaway:

The resort’s bungalows are strategically placed to grant breathtaking views of the coral sea and the mountains or the beautiful forest . Waking up to the sight or the sound of the ocean is a daily luxury you won’t soon forget. The accommodation itself is thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with the environment, making you feel as if you’re an integral part of the tropical forest. A highlight of each bungalow, in my opinion, is the privacy and the spacious balcony, where you can savour your morning (Daintree) tea or evening glass of wine while gazing out at the beautiful views.

Boutique timber bungalows are built high on stilts within the forest canopy providing a private and unobtrusive approach to nature

This year, we stayed in one of the Eucalypt bungalows which are individually positioned and border Thala’s pathways as they gently rise up the headland through the lush Eucalypt forest… I particularly enjoyed the view on the trees and falling asleep to the sound of nature and the distant sound of the waves crashing on the shore. The bungalow was well positioned as we were in the middle of everything, half way from the main pool, bar and restaurant and the little rock pool and private beach. And if you don’t feel like walking, there is always a friendly staff member in one of those little white buggies always happy to give you a ride…but I must say, this is so beautiful that I preferred walking on the little pathways and meet some birds, butterflies or any wildlife living happily and in harmony on site.

Approximately 120 butterfly species and almost 200 bird species have been spotted at Thala. Wallabies, frogs, lace monitor lizards, sugar gliders, echidnas, spiders and geckos are in abundance too.

Each bungalow at Thala Beach is meticulously crafted to provide you with all the modern amenities you could desire. While you’re immersed in nature, you won’t have to sacrifice comfort. The rooms are elegant, spacious, full of light, beautifully appointed, and adorned with all the conveniences you need for a relaxing stay. From plush beds (we slept like babies) to spacious bathrooms with bath and shower and beautiful wooden floors, you’ll find that elegance and comfort is a top priority here.

Eco-Friendly Excellence:

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a shining example of environmental responsibility. It is awarded the highest Ecotourism accreditation for maximising informative & meaningful experiences, whilst enhancing the local environment. Thala Beach Nature Reserve has achieved the highest level of Advanced Eco Certification and is a member of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World.

The resort’s eco-friendly practices include recycling, conserving water and energy, and sustainable building designs, ensuring that your stay has a minimal environmental footprint. This commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding area is truly commendable.

Stunning main rock pool with 3 different levels and featuring waterfalls, spas and grottos

We did not use the aircon at all in our bungalow, the ceiling fans and the natural breeze were more than enough to ensure a beautiful night sleep. The quality of water is also fantastic and my hair has never been more shiny! You can also drink the water straight from the tap and you will be given a Thala Beach insulated bottle to use and keep as a souvenir as well. I just adore their attention to detail.

Another highlight is the beautiful swimming pool, which is surrounded by rocks and trees with different levels. With its salted and fresh water constantly renewed, your hair and your skin will thank for that as it won’t affect them at all. We spent a lot of time this year enjoying the pool and sipping cocktails on the sun bed, living the life!

Adventure and Education:

One of the unique features of Thala Beach is its commitment to education and sustainability. The passionate staff offers guided nature walks, sharing their extensive knowledge about the local flora and fauna. These tours and experience are all complimentary. Their dedication to conservation is evident, and you’ll leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world.

Thala’s highly knowledgeable Rangers and Guides are here to show you Thala’s many wildlife and nature secrets.

There are daily activities. Last time we did not get a chance to take part to any, but this year we wanted to give some a try and we really enjoyed it. We took part to 2 of the complimentary activities: Star Gazing and also the coconut odyssey and both were really interesting. We managed to see the planet Saturn through a gigantic telescope and it was quite something, I mean just staring at this beautiful sky full of stars was already a show. As for the coconut story and history, it was quite fascinating. I must say one of my favourites things at Thala Beach Nature Reserve is actually to drink fresh coconut water directly from the shell so I really enjoyed this. All in all I believe what makes Thala Beach Nature Reserve and its tours even more special is the passion, the friendliness and the beautiful smile of all the staff who are so committed, dedicated and happy to be working in such a wonderful and magical environment.

Culinary Delights:

The culinary experience at Thala Beach’s Osprey’s Restaurant is a treat for the senses. I believe this year, we ate most of our breakfasts, lunches and dinners there…. just because…. it is soooooo beautiful. The view from the restaurant is one of the best you can imagine! You will literally feel like you are in paradise! Actually in the morning I was sometimes greeted by other guests who would say “Good morning and welcome to paradise!”

Enjoying a buffet breakfast while gazing at the birds having fun in the bird bath was the perfect way to start my day with a big smile

Birds are a constant source of entertainment with lorikeets, sun birds and honey eaters taking advantage of the high ceilings to swoop through the dining room and bar. Kookaburras watch quizzically from nearby trees.

My favourite view at breakfast time

You don’t need to worry about having a reservation, if you are a guest here, you will always enjoy the best tables! In the morning you can enjoy the birds serenading you while playing in their birds baths in the trees and on the evening you can enjoy a romantic dinner at sunset…. it can’t get any better than this!

Can’t get enough of this view from the restaurant at any time of the day!

The menu features a nice variety of dishes made from locally sourced ingredients and even from Thala Beach’s own garden. Seafood lovers will be happy with the array of fresh catches available. This year I particularly enjoyed the shared dishes (the lamb and also the whole Barramundi) and a special mention to the chocolate dessert which was a treat.

Osprey’s a la Carte menu changes seasonally. Produce is sourced daily from onsite coconut plantation, edible garden, local markets

The restaurant as well as the main building at this enchanting retreat is designed to embrace all the elements of the tropics. Built from local timbers, it is open and spacious, allowing the cool sea breezes to flow. The polished timber reflects the warm sun of the tropics by day and the soft flicker of lamp light by night. Dining on the open-air terrace, enjoying a beautiful cocktail or a fresh coconut, enveloped by the sounds of the rainforest, creates an unforgettable dining experience that’s as close to nature as you can get.

Perched in the treetops Osprey’s Restaurant is a unique dining experience amongst the birds and wildlife for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Secluded Serenity:

What truly sets Thala Beach Nature Reserve apart from other places is its peaceful and calm atmosphere where you can truly connect to mother nature . Thala’s own private beach is a secluded, pristine stretch of coastline, perfect for relaxation. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll along the shore or dipping your toes in the crystal-clear waters, the beach at Thala Beach Nature Reserve provides a serene escape from the world.

I could spend hours in this rock pool enjoying the sound of the waterfalls and nature

Thala Beach is so unique in the sense that it is nothing like the big crowded and noisy resort you would imagine around Port Douglas…. It is so peaceful here and you will always feel unique, special and like everything offered here is just for you to enjoy.

You can do as much or as little as you want at Thala and that is the beauty about it because everything is there if you wish to… beautiful nature, colourful wildlife, salted rock pools, private balconies, cocktails, fresh coconuts, delicious food, breathtaking views, complimentary tours…. there is even a little book and DVD library and a little shop with plenty of little treasures or useful items you might have forgotten to pack with you, no worries…Thala has your back!

Enjoying some time at Thala Beach little shop and of course trying hats…

A World of Exploration:

Thala Beach’s location offers a gateway to some of the most captivating natural wonders on Earth. You can explore the nearby Daintree Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where ancient, verdant wilderness meets pristine beaches. You can take a snorkeling excursion to the Great Barrier Reef, an experience that will leave you awe-struck by the vibrant underwater world. You can spend time in the Mossman Gorge and enjoy a beautiful walk. You can take the heritage train up to Kurunda and come back with skyrail, visit Cairns aquarium and so much more. There are plenty of tours who can pick you up directly from Thala Beach Nature Reserve who is perfectly located, only 15 minutes away by car from Port Douglas!

In conclusion, Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a journey, a destination that transcends the ordinary and embraces the extraordinary. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while enjoying the comforts of a world-class 5 star resort. Whether you’re a passionate advocate for sustainable travel, a nature enthusiast, or a romantic seeking an idyllic getaway, Thala Beach offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you yearning for more. This hidden gem along the Queensland coast is a testament to the splendour of our natural world and should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

My second time at Thala Beach Nature Reserve was as magical, special and beautiful as the first time. It felt the same and different in a refreshing and exciting way: it is like christmas time, all the year you are waiting for it and you can hardly get tired of it because it is never the same! As always the staff at Thala was absolutely amazing, making you so welcome and helping you in very ways possible to enjoy all the facilities so you have the best experience and holidays you can dream about. This is why I believe the staff is also a big part of the success of this magical place.

So now…. the big question…. will I consider going back again to Thala Beach Nature Reserve for the third time in a row? I guess I would have to spice it up and do things different so I still keep this element of surprise and discovery.

I feel there are still many things on my list I would like to explore at Thala Beach Nature Reserve, like their SPA for example… I have never tried it and I wonder what it looks and feels like, what kind of treatments they have. Also maybe, next time, I would like to try a bungalow with a sea view, it would be nice to compare and to gain a different perspective. There are still a few other complimentary tours that I did not get a chance to try at Thala and next time I definitely want to go the Great Barrier Reef and swim with the green turtles, that is a MUST!

What do they say? The third time is a charm?!…

Until next time

xoxo

Thank you, merci beaucoup Thala Beach Nature Reserve and all its staff, I hope to be back soon!
