They called it puppy love…

Many times I have walked by the guide dogs centre on Morphett street in Adelaide CBD wondering how it actually worked, how dogs were trained, what was going on ect… I was curious about it but felt too shy to push the door and ask some questions about it… but when I have read in the newspaper that there were actually guide dogs discovery centre open days in October, I took my chance and booked me in!

I have really enjoyed this experience and I am really happy I could take part in such event. It is a unique opportunity to learn about guide dogs, their training, their mission, how they can make a huge difference in someone’s life but it is also interesting to experiment and to understand what it is like to live with vision loss and have to develop and rely on other senses.

Actually, there were some activities such as: playing basketball with glasses simulating a vision loss, walk with your eyes closed with a white cane on a fake street, test sounds and develop an understanding of safe listening levels, learn braille…

In my opinion walking with a white cane with my eyes shut down was the most interesting experience because I have realized how different (and scary) the world could be when you can not possibly see and have to rely on your ears and touch. I mean crossing a street is something we are doing everyday without even thinking about it but when you can not see it becomes totally different and dangerous… and it feels comforting to know that there are ways to cope with it and for those who do not wish to use a cane, they can be helped by a guide dog and go on with their everyday lives!

These dogs (Labrador) are amazing, they are doing a great job, they are very intelligent animals, they are heroes and they simply are adorable and lovable! I know it can be tempting to pet them because they are cute and helpful but today I have learnt that when they are wearing a yellow coat (meaning they are being trained) or wearing their harness (meaning that they are guiding their owner) it is forbidden to interact with them because they are working and focus on their task and you don’t want them or their owner to be put in danger because they have been distracted by you!

It is one of the many things I have learnt thanks to the friendly volunteers working at the Guide dogs centre. Tours are organized during school holidays period and  it is definitely worth the visit!

The barefoot philosophy

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet” , Thích Nhất Hạnh

Did you know that walking barefoot on the beach is like having a Free YOGA and SPA session at the same time?!

So save your money on a pedi, throw your shoes away and head to the beach!

Actually the sand acts as a natural exfoliant, gently rubbing off dead skin… By walking on the beach you will get for sure softer, more supple, more attractive skin on the heels and balls of your feet. Remember this unwanted skin?! it is all gone now and it did not cost you a penny, magic, isn’t it?!

Walking barefoot is also relaxing and energizing… it is like having a foot massage, it will also increase the blood circulation in this area.. You will feel so good and your foot will be thankful for this special treat!

Sand provides resistance, so walking on the beach is more demanding than walking on road so it will keep your fit and healthy. Soft foot and amazing body, that is exactly what we want!

Walking barefoot in the sand offers so many benefits, so if you’ve got access to a beach, get out and get moving.

As for people living in Adelaide, no excuse! We are lucky to have many beautiful beaches around us such as: Semaphore, Grange , Henley, Glenelg, Brighton… so pick your favorite and enjoy the walk and the view!

Bali : The island of the gods…

Bali is not just a beautiful trip, it’s a cultural and spiritual journey that needs to be experienced in order to be fully appreciated… Actually, it all started 2 years ago when I have read this famous book called « Eat, pray. Love » based on a true story of a woman who lived 6 months in Italy, then 6 months in India and then 6 months in Bali. Her wonderful story inspired me and I was curious to know more about this country since I have never been there before. So I felt very lucky to spend my christmas time in Bali!

I have really enjoyed this country, its amazing temple, its wonderful colours, its delicious cuisine but above all its friendly people. It is impressive how balinese people are generous, lovely and cheerful… somehow you always end up with a big smile on your face when you are around them. Thanks to Airbnb I managed to find a beautiful villa with a nice swiming pool near canggu’s beach. Each day, I would get up early, do a 1 hour yoga session on the garden rooftop facing the sea, have a swim, enjoy an awesome breakfast prepared by Ketut (I ate the best bananas pancakes ever), then I would go surfing in the afternoon or visit a famous place, the evening I would enjoy a nice dinner on the beach or at the villa. Time went by so quickly… I have visited many places such as Ubud (known as the capital city of art), the monkeys forest, the water temple, the rice paddies… everything was absolutely gorgeous…

While in Bali, I had the chance to experience two important ceremonies called : Galungan and Kuningan

« Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremonies. The spirits of deceased relatives who have died and been cremated return to visit their former homes, and the current inhabitants have a responsibility to be hospitable through prayers and offerings. The most obvious sign of the celebrations are the penjor – bamboo poles with offerings suspended at the end. These are installed by the side of roads. On the other hand, he Kuningan ceremony in Bali traces its name to the special offerings of Yellow Rice, or ‘nasi kuning. These are offered to the ancestors and Gods, to appease them and keep them happy. The Kuningan in Bali is a time when the spirits of decease people return to earth and the whole family comes together and prays to their ancestors and the Gods to keep them happy and to bless them. » (source Wikipedia)

In my opinion it was a humble and peaceful experience which I am glad I could be part of. Balinese people are very spiritual people and it felt really good to pray with them and for the peace of their ancestors.

I am grateful I can travel and learn about different cultures. I am always amazed by what I discover…Once the Dalai Lama said : «As often as possible, go someplace you’ve never been before. Experience new places and new things. You might find yourself with someone or somewhere that makes you much happier than your previous circumstance. The Earth is so vast with unique and beautiful places, why wouldn’t you want to go explore them? » …

What about you ? Which country are you going to visit this year ?

A french episode at Muratti Cakes & Gateaux

Every new friend is like the beginning of a journey!

I am glad I have the opportunity to meet so many people from so many different places! I am always amazed by their stories… it is wonderful to realise that the world is full of interesting people and learn new things with them.

It is unbelievable how much I have learnt since I am traveling, everyone has a different story to tell and it is like opening a new book each time… There is always something to learn, to share, to discover… I really hope they feel the same about me and that I am making a difference in their life and they are happy to know me!

I used to think that you make most of your friends at college and then somehow you stick with them… but since I live abroad I have a totally new outlook on things and I have realised that no matter your age, occupation or whatsoever there are always many opportunities to make new friends and enjoy your time with them!

This morning, I had a lovely breakfast with Ann: we go to Spanish classes together once a week. She is a lovely lady, she is a native Australian, she is retired so we don’t belong to the same generation but still we get on well and we enjoy talking to each other (great practice for my English by the way)! She lives in North Adelaide and since I have just moved to this area, she has decided to give me a tour and it was absolutely lovely from her! How kind to show me around: the aquatic centre, the sport centre, the restaurants, the cafes, the parks… How kind from her!

We have also enjoyed a nice coffee and a cake at a place that I have never heard before (it is one of her favorites) called “Muratti Cakes & Gateaux”. Somehow it reminded me of the bakeries and tea salon in Paris… It was nice to see french cakes that I have been missing a lot lately… I have treated myself with a nice lemon tart and a cappuccino, it was absolutely delicious! Ann has insisted on inviting me and I felt so lucky… Australian people are really friendly 🙂

For those living in Adelaide and who want to taste gorgeous french pastries, I highly recommend this place which happen to be in Proscpect city (very closed from North Adelaide) and there are also nice and cute little shops around so it is definitely worth the trip by car or by bus G10.

Next time when you go to Muratti, tell me which cakes you had… they all look so good, I am curious to know which ones are popular!

In case you can not possibly decide, here is a tip: usually when in France, my favorites cakes are: lemon tart, strawberry tart and anything with chocolate or coffee. I mean you can’t go wrong with those, can you?!

Je suis Charlie, I am Charlie, Yo soy Charlie, Ich bin Charlie…

A thunder woke me up early this morning… when I looked through the window the sky was dark and grey and it was raining a lot… I just thought that it did not look like a good day, this kind of weather can be depressing sometimes… I could not imagine how right I was going to be about that…

As usual I checked my messages and realised that many family members and friends from France have posted the same picture « Je suis Charlie » (I am Charlie) so I immediately knew that something had happened in my country… I called my mother and I also checked the news and realised that a tragic terrorist attack took place in Paris at Charlie Hebdo’s office on 7 January morning killing 12 people, among them 10 journalists and 2 policemen !

I was shocked to hear such thing could happen and so sad thinking about the families of these people who had no idea about what would happen to them when they left their homes in the morning to go to work as they do everyday… then I have realised that some of my friends in Australia have heard about it too but were frustrated not to understand the what, the how and mostly the why…. Don’t get me wrong, we do get news here in Adelaide about other countries but it is not very detailed so I thought maybe I could write something about it hoping this will help to have a better understanding of what happened from a french point of view.

Actually, for those who have never heard about Charlie Hebdo : it is a famous French satirical weekly paper, featuring cartoons, reports, polemics and jokes. It was created in 1969 and it is well known for being irreverent and non-conformist since the publication often makes fun of politics, culture and religion… mostly Catholicism, Islam, Judaism… Their style is pretty provocative with a good dose of humour since they are making fun of any kind of subjects with caustic cartoons to illustrate their articles. The success of this paper is also due to a great team composed of famous and talented cartoonists and journalists who are not afraid to speak their minds. As you can imagine many readers are huge fans and absolutely love it, some don’t care and some just hate it and don’t hesitate to let them know by criticizing any publication (which is quite easy nowadays with social media). Charlie Hebdo is used to being insulted, to being sued and to getting a lot of threats (their offices were bombed at night a couple of years ago)… but this has never stopped them to go on and express their opinions ! Afterall France is known to be a free country where the press is free… it is called freedom of expression and french people are very proud of it and so am I!

Unfortunately on 07 January 2015, two well armed men, suspected to be islamic terrorists, decided that Charlie Hebdo paper was going too far by making fun of their prophet. They decided to make their own justice by depriving the staff from the freedom of speech… sentencing them to death! The terrorists intruded the building and took the journalists and the cartoonists by surprise during the weekly editorial board meeting shooting at everybody. Two policemen standing on their way were also killed. It was a very violent attack, very cruel…and everybody is still shocked !

France is sad and mourning the deaths of these 12 people who had lives, families and who died when their only crime was to write, to draw their opinions and to protect the freedom expression ! Who would have ever imagined that a drawing could killed in France?!

France and many countries have expressed their sorrow in the face of tragedy! Trying to shut down a media organization is called terrorism! It is an attack of our values, an attack on the freedom of expression and the press, a core element of our free democratic culture!

You can hide our eyes but we will still see!

You can close our ears but we will still hear!

You can shut our mouth but we will still speak!

You can hold our hands but we will still write!

You can try to shut us down but we will still believe!

Because we are FREE !!! We are all Charlie ❤

Happy new year 2015!!!

I wish you all joy, happiness, health, luck, success and above all LOVE for this coming new year hoping that your dreams will come true, your projects will come to life and your efforts will be rewarded! I like to believe that amazing things are on their way and it is just a question of time before we experience them !

I wanted to write something inspiring for the new year but it is not that easy… so I have been thinking and looking at old pictures hoping to find some ideas… Somehow I happened to find my graduation pictures (Master degree in Marketing – Business school and University of Strasbourg) and while looking at these pics, it suddenly hit me!

I thought that instead trying to write something that might be naive or dull and probably useless, I would instead share with you a powerful and inspiring speech which was pronounced by Steve Jobs actually during a graduation ceremony! This text called « Linking the dots » is pretty famous but still so true, full of meaning and so appropriate. It is the perfect message for those who are looking for directions and for answers. I thought it could be a beautiful way to start this brand new year full of promises and hopes!

One last thing, I want to say: Believe in yourself and your destiny, trust your judgement, follow your dreams, never give up (especially with your English for those like me still learning it lol), be passionate, take risks, work hard, allow yourself to make mistakes, be patient… Don’t let the others define you and don’t allow them to decide for you! You are the only one having the key of your kingdom! Sometimes it won’t be easy, there will be obstacles and moments of doubts but stay focus, be strong and you will overcome all the difficulties, making you a stronger and a better person and amazing things will happen to you because life can be (also) beaufiful if you give it a try with all of your heart and your guts!

Enjoy the reading: http://news.stanford.edu/news/2005/june15/jobs-061505.html and as Steve Jobs would say: « Stay hungry! Stay foolish!»

and have a wonderful year 2015!
xoxo
Graduation Party
It is me on the front row, black dress, red shoes and red belt: CONGRATS!!!

Do you hear christmas coming?

It is in the air, it is in the streets, it is in our houses, it is in our minds and our spirits…

It is a little song playing in your head, it is red and green all other the place, it is all about glitter and shiny stuffs, lovely food, many presents and probably too many chocolates… or not 😉
Christmas is all around us and it is a nice way to celebrate and conclude year 2014. Some of us will be with their families and friends, some will be traveling, some will be relaxing…

Whatever your agenda is, I wish you a wonderful christmas and a happy time!

SMILE – LAUGH – ENJOY

A ticket to the past…

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to sit in an old train, smell the wood and the leather seats and hear the steam engine of the locomotive running… Now close your eyes and for a minute imagine that you are in an  Agatha Christie novel while glancing at the pictures…

Today I had the chance to visit the biggest railroad museum in Australia and it was really a great experience! It was very interesting to learn about trains history and it was also fun to climb into the cabs of giant steam engines and walk through elegant carriages and just imagine what it was like to travel by that time…

Actually I was pretty impressed by the level of comfort they managed to achieve.. some carriages just look like little flats with real beds, bathroom and kitchen… traveling by train (depending on your class status) could be in the days of yore a luxurious and enjoyable journey!

I couldn’t resist acting like if I was a traveler from another century, and my bestie managed to capture beautifully the spirit of the past in a series of black and white photographies.

Purple rain…

Spring is really a nice season in Adelaide because everything comes back to life after a long sleep: trees growing, flowers blooming, birds singing. A new day begins and you can feel it in the fresh air:  the whole city is waking up!

The weather is not too warm so it is just perfect to enjoy nice walks in the city, sit at a terrace for early an cup of tea and also enjoy some trips to the beach even if the water is still a bit cold.

The Australians I have met so far all told me that I have moved to Adelaide at the best time of the year because spring is definitely their favorite season! No wonder why…

At the moment I can not help gazing at the Jacaranda trees (I used to call them purple trees because I had no idea about their name until I was told). There are so many of them here: their beautiful colour bring a joy spirit to all the streets, they are just splendid! I just love them and I am glad I have the chance to see them everyday in Adelaide when I am out exploring the city.

I must say I have never seen them before, it must be too cold in Europe for them. When I was living in France I used to love cherries trees with their beautiful white and pink flowers flying in the air when it was windy which added a romantic touch to the moment. But now I am living in Australia and I have fallen in love with Jacarandas!

These trees florish the first weeks of November, their name Jacaranda means fragrant and they announce that spring is coming soon…  how poetic!

From my bedroom window when sitting at my desk I can admire a huge beautiful Jacaranda tree looking like a king in his kingdom all dressed with majestic purple flowers.  I feel inspired by this beautiful view and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to seize the moment.

The world is beautiful and you can be amazed even by  a tree… what a joy to be here, to think, to dream, to love… ❤

West Terrace Cemetery: a poetic experience

Some say it is the most poetic place they know in Adelaide! You would think how awkward for a cemetery…I am normally not a fan of such places and don t think I am a *Vampire diaries* addict (the main girl character of the show Nina likes to rest and write in her home town cemetery) … But I have to confess this cemetery is fascinating, nearly magic…

I have really enjoyed my self guided walk tour here on a sunny spring afternoon! It is really a lovely and peaceful place and this is really a nice walk! It is definitely poetic! The landscape, the graves, the trees…even the birds have a story to tell In a way it reminded me of Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris!

Brochures are at the entrance of the cemetery, I have picked the famous women tour and I have learnt a few things about brave and passionate women born in Adelaide or coming from London with dreams and big ideas to change the world! It was really inspiring!

Actually the walk lasted about 2 hours, the brochure was well detailed with a map and full of information so I did not get lost, I have learnt many facts and actually time went by so quickly..I am pretty sure I will come back, there are plenty other themes tours to learn more about Adelaide and guess what it is totally free!

Furthermore, the West Terrace cemetery runs night tours on Fridays ($25), it is a totally different experience but definitely worth it! I had the chance to take part to the special Halloween tour on Friday 31st October and it was amazing: interesting stories, sounds and lights effects, great actors…. it was pretty fun and most of the participants came in their halloween costumes which really added something to the atmosphere 😉 No wonder that West Terrace Cemetery has taken out the award for best cultural and heritage tourism attraction for the third year in row seeing the cemetery inducted into the South Australian Tourism Hall of Fame.

In my opinion West Terrace is definitely an original city cemetery, it is well kept and fulfills its role protecting ancestral heritage, offering peace and bringing life in a creative and respectful way to old and interesting stories about Adelaide!
